The day started off
well. There were about 30 people at the control station and the sun was
a scorcher. However as the walk progressed, we were getting more and
more disappointed. There was some sort of development going on at the
grassland. Usually there will be many Blue Pansies but we saw only two
this time. It was worse for the Peacock Pansy as we spotted only one.
The Cabbage White was nowhere to be seen….must be extinct by now.
Certain patches of wild grass and herbaceous plants were bulldozed and
planted with trees for a more clean and manageable look. That must have
been the reason for the Cabbage White’s demise. Where there was a
Sui-Mei bush which attracted many butterflies previously now lie a mount
of upturned soil.
We managed to find a
hollowed out pupa of the Striped Albatross with the male wing patterns
showing through the wing cases. There were many tiny ants coming out of
the opening which they made.
We ended the walk at
11am well before the scheduled time
