Launch of NSS Butterfly Field Guide

Venue: Singapore Botanic Gardens

             Garden Briefing Room (located at the Visitor Center at Cluny road, next to the
             Nature's Niche book shop)
Time : 9 am - 12 pm

Participants will be foremostly treated to a talk cum slide presentation of our winged wonders in their full splendor. The presentation will focus on the characteristics of the butterfly families and the ten most common butterflies found in Singapore. Thereafter we will launch the pocket sized butterfly field guide that BIG had worked on for the past year. This will culminate with a butterfly race where participants with the help of the guide will be able to identify butterflies almost immediately!

Butterfly Walk at Alexandra Hospital Butterfly Trail with Simon Chan (9748-5465).

We are going to 'road test' the new NSS Butterfly Field Guide at our favorite Alexandra Hospital Butterfly Trail. Come join us and see how many butterfly species you can identify with the help of the guide. Tell us what you like about the guide and how we can make the guide better. 

The NSS Butterfly Guide will be available for sale before the walk.

This walk will last about three hours.

This talk will focus on butterfly families of both the Neo-Tropics and the Orient and highlight the similarities and differences of butterflies in these continents. Butterfly Walk at Mount Faber Park with Gan Cheong Weei (97544174)

Meeting place: Seah Im Food Center near Car Park 'D'. (Mighty Minds Street Directory Map 142 A1).
Time: 9:30 am.

From Seah Im Food Court, we are going to take a leisurely walk up the newly constructed Marang Trail which will lead us to the Mount Faber Park.  Species encountered at this park include the Chocolate Grass Yellow, King Crow, Plain Nawab, Yamfly, Common Imperial, Fluffy Tit and Acacia Blue.

Please remember to bring along your NSS Butterfly Guide!

This walk will last about three hours.

Emperor Moths & Friends from SE Asia & the Amazon by Dr Preston Murphy
Tine : 2pm
Venue : Classroom 3, Botany Centre, Singapore Botanic Gardens

Dr Preston Murphy will talk about "Mad about Moths: Emperor Moths & Friends from SE Asia & the Amazon" to highlight the beauty of moths in Asia as well as in South America. This talk, targeted at adult nature lovers, will focus on the diversity of large moths and dispel the myth that all moths are dull in colour and unattractive.

Mad About Moths for Kids by Cicada Tree Eco-Place
Time : 2pm
Venue : Tanglin Core Information Counter, Singapore Botanic Gardens

Note : This interactive session is limited to 30 children. Please RSVP to lim_wei_ling@nparks.gov.sg by 9th May 2008.

Mad about Moths for Kids will teach kids aged between 5 and 9 how to recognize moths, the differences between moths and butterflies, the life cycle of a moth, why moths are important members of our living planet, and what we can do to make a difference to moths! Children will also get a chance to take quick walk in the Gardens to see some butterflies so as to learn the major differences between moths and butterflies. This session will be fun and engage a young learner.

Butterfly Walk at MacRitchie Trail with Simon Chan (9748-5465)

Note : This walk is for NSS members only.  Non member who are interested in attending the walk can sign up as members on the spot or from NSS website

In April, we introduced members to a number of beautiful butterfly species that frequent Mt Faber Park. This time we will take our newly-found butterfly watching skills to the forest.
Members will at once notice the more brilliant colours of forest denizens as compared to the ones in the urban areas. Species encountered here include the regal Royal Assyrian, the very rare Dark Blue Jungle Glory, the big, strong and fast flying Great Helen and many more deep forest dwellers.

This walk will last about two hours.

Butterfly Walk at Upper Seletar Reservoir with Simon Chan (9748-5465)
Meeting Place: Upper Seletar Reservoir Park Viewing Tower
Time: 09.30am

We will be taking a leisurely stroll around Upper Seletar Reservoir park, which is a haunt for Long-tailed Macaques. Butterflies like the Great Mormon, Malay Lacewing, Commander, Common Mormon, Cruiser and many more forest denizens abound. We hope to see the rare Dark Blue Jungle Glory, the seasonal Plain Lacewing and the once-in-a-lifetime encounter, the Lesser Wavy Maplet. As recent as November 2007, the Green Oak Blue made a stunning appearance after being missing for a decade. Meet at the reservoir’s viewing tower at 9.30 am. Registration not needed. Butterfly Walk at Bukit Timah Cycling Track  (97544174)
Meeting Place : Bukit Timah Nature Reserve Visitor's Centre
Time: 09.30am

We will be taking the trail towards the quarry on the right. Butterflies that can be spotted here include the ever magnificent and endangered Common Birdwing and Common Rose. Others like the Knight, Horsfields Baron, Archduke, Malay Viscount and many more forest denizens can be encountered on this track, not forgetting the Autumn Leaf which has called Singapore home since Sep 1999. Please bring enough drinking water and insect repellent. Meet at the Visitor Centre at 9.30am.

Butterfly Walk at Terminal 3 Changi Airport Butterfly Garden with Simon Chan (9748-5465)
Meeting Place: Information counter, Terminal 3
Times: 9.00 to 10.30am, 10.30 to 12.00pm

We will be taking an inaugural stroll inside the enclosed Butterfly Garden located at Terminal 3. Currently it is the only butterfly garden in an airport setting anywhere in the world. While a majority of the butterfly species inside are both from Singapore and neighbouring Malaysia, there are a few found only in the latter.
Registration is compulsory as this is a very high security area.
